Walking Weekend Review

The weekend was a great success. We had about 80 walkers over the weekend with the two Bluestack Ramblers walks and about fifteen that went with Bernarard on the Murvagh walk. SATURDAY WALK WAS A TWO OPTION WALK and ended up being a three way walk. Fiona Beglane took the first group on the lake circut walk the shorter option of the day. John McGroary     took the next group to the plane crash and as usual told the stories about the crash and the happenings after that time with the links that were made with the Bluestack Ramblers and one of the survivors of the Crash, Jim Gilcrest. Bernard McGlynchey then took some of the walkers to the White Outcrop. By all accounts it was a very successful day.
Sunday there were two options also. The group stayed together until they reached Lough Belshade. For many of the walkers it was their first time at the Ashdoon Falls and Lough Belshade. Quite a few people were surprised that they were walking on open ground and the track stopped at Ashdoon Falls. This made walking hard for those who are used to walking on track. Some people that intended to do the Buttress decided to return with Paddy Meehan after he had told us all the stories about the Friers, treasures, prisons and The O Donnell's.  Paddy Meehan and Maureen Cannon guided the first group down. The feedback that we were given on the day was How beautiful the Bluestacks are and how unspoiled and quite they are.
Anne and Michael Leonard continued with the longer higher walk. Matthew Pacowihi from Germany was awestruck. a man who has spent most of his life running marathons and just recently taken to hillwalking. Of course the weather was beautiful and when the group reached the top of the Butteress the view was spactular.Counties that could be seen were Donegal, Derry ,Tryone, Fermanagh, Leitrim,Sligo and Mayo. We  were so Blessed especially the fact that we had so many visitors to the area.
Some comments from the weekend " Why are these falls not known about?". " It's so Beautiful and unspoiled up here". " We are used to walking in the Mourns and sometimes you can't even walk on the paths there are so many people there, here you have it all to yourselves".
The Bluestack Ramblers are delighted with the reaction they got over the weekend. It was the first time they had put walks on over a weekend instead of the usual Sunday walk.It is hoped that the Bluestack Ramblers and the newly formed Donegal Walkers Welcome will work together in the future to bring more walking visitors to this area.
